Four spots in a short walk

Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo is one of the most photographed streets in Lisbon: a steep, narrow lane with the Bica funicular's rails running down between old buildings and a glimpse of the river at the bottom. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara is a two-level garden terrace with benches, fountains and a wide view east across the Baixa to São Jorge Castle. Next to it, the steep Calçada da Glória is covered in murals. And Chiado — with its old cafés, bookshops and Largo do Carmo — gives you an elegant, grown-up backdrop.

Lisbon's Bica and Glória funiculars have been out of service since late 2025 while the city reviews their safety. The streets themselves are as photogenic as ever, and if the Bica reopens before your session we will include it.

Timing

Bairro Alto is Lisbon's nightlife district, so the streets are quiet in the morning and lively late at night. We shoot the Bica street and the lanes in the morning when they are empty and clean. The São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint faces east, so it is lovely in the afternoon and at sunset, when the castle and the Baixa across the valley glow in warm light.

1. Chiado — café terraces, Largo do Carmo and elegant façades.
2. Rua da Bica — the funicular street, from the top looking down to the river.
3. Bairro Alto lanes — graffiti, balconies and quiet corners in the morning.
4. São Pedro de Alcântara — the garden terrace and the view to the castle.

Best for

This is our go-to area for solo travellers and content creators who want a city look, and for engagement sessions with an editorial feel. Stronger colours, tailored outfits and sunglasses all work well here.

A 60-minute city route with timings

A morning session on the 15th of May (sunrise 06:25) might start in Chiado at 07:30 when the streets are empty, reach Rua da Bica at 07:55, cross the Bairro Alto lanes at 08:15 and end at São Pedro de Alcântara at 08:30 with the castle across the valley. For warm light on the view, flip it and end at the viewpoint an hour before sunset.

Combine Bairro Alto with

• Miradouro de Santa Catarina — a lively terrace with the river and the bridge, ten minutes' walk away.
• Praça do Comércio — downhill through the Baixa.

Best months

All year. In summer, mornings are cooler and the streets are cleanest; in winter, late-afternoon light on São Pedro de Alcântara is lovely from about 16:30.
