Where to propose in Lisbon: 12 spots we'd choose ourselves

Lisbon is made for proposals: viewpoints over red roofs, a river that turns gold at sunset, palaces in the hills and cliffs on the Atlantic. The hard part is not finding a beautiful place — it's finding one that is beautiful and quiet enough for the moment to feel like yours. Here is how we think about the best spots after planning many proposals in the city.

1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — the classic sunset

Lisbon's highest viewpoint looks over the castle and the whole city towards the river and the 25 de Abril Bridge. At sunset the light is extraordinary — and so is the crowd from spring to autumn. It works if you arrive early and let your photographer pick a spot along the wall where the background is clean. For an empty terrace, come at sunrise. More about Senhora do Monte.

2. Miradouro de Santa Luzia — tiles, bougainvillea and sunrise

Blue-and-white azulejos, a pergola covered in flowers and a view over Alfama's rooftops to the river. It is the most romantic viewpoint in Lisbon and one of the busiest, so we only recommend it at sunrise, when you might have it to yourselves for twenty minutes. More about Alfama and Santa Luzia.

3. Largo das Portas do Sol — the wide view

Right next to Santa Luzia, with a wider panorama including the white dome of São Vicente de Fora. The terrace is open and bright; at sunrise it is a lovely alternative if Santa Luzia already has a few people in it.

4. Cais das Colunas — steps into the river

At the edge of Praça do Comércio, two stone columns and marble steps lead straight into the Tagus. At dawn, with the sun rising over the water, it is quiet, dramatic and very photogenic. Later in the day it becomes one of the busiest places in Lisbon. More about Praça do Comércio.

5. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara — a garden with a view

A leafy terrace above the Baixa with benches, fountains and a view across the valley to the castle. It feels calmer than the Alfama viewpoints, especially in the late afternoon when the castle glows. The lower level of the garden is often quieter than the upper terrace.

6. Miradouro da Graça — pines and a kiosk

A little lower than Senhora do Monte, with shady pine trees, a kiosk café and a view towards the castle and the bridge. It suits couples who would prefer a relaxed drink after the "yes" rather than a crowd of photographers.

7. Belém riverside — the tower at golden hour

The promenade near Belém Tower is wide and open, with the river and the sunset sky. It is ideal if you want space, and it's easy to follow the proposal with a relaxed walk and a custard tart. More about Belém.

8. Pena Park, Sintra — the fairy-tale palace

The terraces and forest paths around the colourful Pena Palace are unforgettable — and full of visitors from mid-morning. Photo sessions in the Parques de Sintra parks pay a €150 heritage image fee on the day, and decor and exclusive use are not allowed, so plan something simple and time it for opening. 9. Monserrate, Sintra — the secret garden

A romantic palace in a botanical garden, far quieter than Pena. Lawns, exotic trees and stone arches make it one of our favourite places for a private proposal in the Sintra hills. The same park rules apply.

10. Cabo da Roca — the edge of Europe

The westernmost point of mainland Europe: cliffs, a lighthouse and nothing but ocean ahead. At sunset it is spectacular and windy. Stay well back from the cliff edge — the paths are unfenced in places — and bring a jacket.

11. The cliffs near Cascais

West of Cascais town, around Boca do Inferno, the coastline breaks into rocky arches and ledges. It is easy to find a quiet corner with the ocean behind you, especially outside summer. More about Cascais.

12. A private boat on the Tagus

Several companies run private sunset sailing trips on the river. It's the most private option on this list, with the bridge and the city behind you. Book the boat yourself and tell us the time — we will join and photograph the moment on board.

How to choose between them

• You want it private: Santa Luzia or Cais das Colunas at sunrise, Monserrate, or a boat.
• You want the biggest view: Senhora do Monte, Portas do Sol or Cabo da Roca.
• Your partner loves fairy tales: Pena Park or Monserrate in Sintra.
• You want the ocean: Cascais or Cabo da Roca at sunset.
• You want a relaxed walk afterwards: Belém riverside or Graça.
