How to plan a surprise proposal in Lisbon, step by step

A great proposal looks spontaneous, but almost never is. The couples whose moments go perfectly have usually thought about four things: where, when, how to get there without raising suspicion and what happens if the weather doesn't cooperate. Here is the plan we walk our clients through.

8 to 12 weeks before: dates, spot and photographer

• Pick the day. Avoid your first day in Lisbon (flights run late, you'll be tired) and your last (no room for a rain delay). The second or third day is ideal.
• Choose sunrise or sunset. Sunrise means empty viewpoints; sunset feels more natural but you'll share it. Use our sunrise and sunset table.
• Shortlist two spots. Our proposal spots guide covers the best twelve.
• Book your photographer. Spring and autumn weekends fill up early.

4 to 6 weeks before: the cover story and the details

• Write the cover story. "Let's catch the sunrise before breakfast," "I booked a table near the viewpoint," "I read about a walking tour that stops there." Keep it simple and in character for your relationship.
• Plan what you'll both wear. A dinner reservation afterwards is the easiest way to make sure your partner dresses up without suspecting anything.
• Decide on extras. Flowers, a picnic, a musician or a private boat need booking in advance.
• Book the celebration. A restaurant with a view, a fado dinner in Alfama or a rooftop bar — somewhere to go straight after.

The week before: confirm everything

• Check the forecast and agree a plan B with your photographer — a covered spot nearby, or a different day.
• Confirm the signal. Taking off your sunglasses, a hand on the railing, a WhatsApp message: something small you can do naturally.
• Send your photographer a photo of you both and describe what you'll be wearing, so you're easy to spot.
• Visit the spot at the same time of day if you can, so you know the route and how long it takes to get there.

On the day

1. Arrive on time, not early. Your photographer is already in position; arriving much earlier just means waiting around nervously.
2. Stand where you agreed. Usually with your partner facing the view and you turning towards them, so both faces are visible.
3. Give the signal, take a breath, kneel. Open the ring box towards your partner — the right way up.
4. Slow down. Hold the moment and the hug for a few seconds longer than feels natural. That's where the best photos are.
5. Then introduce us. We walk over, congratulate you and start the portrait session while you're both still glowing.

Things people forget

The ring on the plane

Always in hand luggage. Airport security may open the box, which is fine — just keep it close. In Lisbon, keep it in a front pocket in crowded places like Tram 28 and the viewpoints.

Sunglasses and hats

They hide the eyes — which is where the emotion is. Ask your partner to take them off at the viewpoint "for a selfie".

Phones

If your partner likes to film everything, they may have their phone out. That's fine; we'll get the angle anyway.

The call home

Many couples video-call family straight after the "yes". We keep shooting — those are some of the most emotional frames of the day.

What to send your photographer

• Date, time window and first-choice spot, plus the backup spot
• A photo of you both and what you'll be wearing
• The signal, and whether you'll kneel
• Your WhatsApp number, and how your partner must not find out
• Any extras: flowers, friends hiding nearby, a boat, a dinner booking
