Colours that look great against azulejos and pastel façades, shoes that survive the calçada, and what the weather is really like in every month.

Lisbon is a colourful city: pastel façades, blue-and-white tiles, yellow trams, terracotta roofs and a river that changes colour through the day. The right outfit works with that background instead of fighting it. Here's what we tell every client before their session.
Lisbon's famous calçada portuguesa — the black-and-white limestone pavement — is beautiful and slippery, especially on hills, in the morning dew and after rain. Thin heels also get stuck between the stones. Our advice: walk in trainers or flat sandals and bring the pretty shoes in a bag. Block heels and flat boots are the best compromise if you only want one pair.
| Location | Works beautifully | Think twice |
|---|---|---|
| Alfama & Santa Luzia | White, pale blue, blush, one bold red | Busy prints next to the tiles |
| Praça do Comércio | White, blue, green, neutrals | Yellow and mustard |
| Belém | White, navy, sand, sage | Very dark head-to-toe |
| Bairro Alto & Chiado | Tailored neutrals, black, a strong colour | Beachwear |
| Sintra | Emerald, burgundy, mustard, cream | Thin fabrics in cold mist |
| Cascais & the coast | White, blue, sand, linen | Very short skirts on windy days |
Lisbon has mild winters and warm, dry summers. Temperatures below are typical daytime highs; Sintra is usually a few degrees cooler and the coast is windier.
| Month | Typical high | What to wear | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | about 15°C | Wool coat or trench, knitwear, boots | Rainiest stretch of the year; clear days are crisp and bright |
| February | about 16°C | Coat you can take off for photos, layers | Camellias flower in the gardens, especially in Sintra |
| March | about 19°C | Light jacket, midi dresses, loafers | Clocks change on the last Sunday — sunset jumps an hour later |
| April | about 20°C | Light layers, a denim or linen jacket | Showers come and go; carry a small umbrella |
| May | about 23°C | Flowing dresses, linen shirts | One of the best months: warm, green and long evenings |
| June | about 26°C | Light linen and cotton, sandals | Santo António festivities in mid-June fill Alfama with parties |
| July | about 28°C | Breathable fabrics, hats for walking | Hot afternoons — shoot at sunrise or late evening |
| August | about 29°C | The lightest fabrics you own | Busiest tourist month; sunrise sessions are gold |
| September | about 27°C | Summer clothes with a layer for the evening | Warm sea, softer light, fewer crowds than August |
| October | about 23°C | Light knits, midi dresses, jackets | First rains; warm golden afternoons in between |
| November | about 18°C | Coats and knitwear in warm colours | Sunsets before 17:30 after the clocks go back |
| December | about 16°C | Winter coats, scarves, rich colours | Christmas lights in the Baixa and Chiado |
Coordinate, don't match. One of you can wear a colour and the other a neutral that complements it: a terracotta dress and a cream shirt, a navy suit and a white dress. Make sure you are both dressed at the same level — one in a gown and one in shorts looks odd in every photo.
Give kids clothes they can run and sit in. Avoid characters and slogans, and skip brand-new shoes. For babies, soft knits and simple rompers photograph beautifully. Bring a spare top for the child most likely to meet an ice cream.
Long, fitted or flowing dresses that show the bump — and flat shoes for walking between spots. Our maternity page has more ideas.
Wind is the enemy of complicated hairstyles. Loose waves, a low bun or a sleek ponytail hold up best. If you'd like professional hair and make-up, book it for the morning of your session; we can suggest artists who come to your hotel.
Still unsure? Send us photos of two or three outfits before your session and we'll tell you which works best for the location and the light.
